EAGLE POINT
2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom (sleeps 5)
OCCUPANCY LIMIT: 5
On a ledge point above the shores of clear Hancock Pond lies a small gem of a log cabin, with all the modern amenities.
The cabin features:
The front porch overlooks the lake, with the sun setting spectacularly a bit to the left of Mt Washington. If you're an early riser, you can sip your coffee and watch the sunrise in the lake's reflection, as the first rays hit the tips of the Presidential Range and work their way toward you.
A short walk takes you to the sand beach in a private cove complete with a picnic table and firepit. Hancock Pond has a public boat launch and is an appropriate size and depth for small motorboats, just large enough for water skiing. More people use the lake for kayaking and canoeing, as this also allows access to smaller, adjacent, Sand Pond via The Dugway.
Stocked with fish by the state, the submerged rocks off Eagle Point (watch your boat motor!) are some of the best fishing on the lake. And, of course, located as it is in Maine's Lake Region, you have access to many other water bodies, including the nearby, large, Sebago Lake.
Much of the adjacent land is owned by the state. It is accessible directly from Eagle Point cabin. Simply walk, bike, or ATV out the private road to the historic Hiram to Brighton narrow gauge railroad bed. Still open for recreation along most of its original length it also connects you to the local ATV trail system, as well as taking you into the State Land which contains completely undeveloped Middle and Brown Ponds (reachable on the old woods roads).
Located on the edge of the White Mountain's foothills, there are numerous scenic, local hiking trails for a variety of skill levels. Nearby Bridgton has two grocery stores, and a charming Main Street, full of locally owned shops and restaurants, as well as a movie theater. If you need to do more extensive shopping, North Conway, New Hampshire, is 45-minute drive. Located in the heart of the White Mountains, it's a sales tax-free outlet mecca that also provides a larger grocery store, Walmart, Staples, and Storyland in addition to other child-friendly entertainment.
Portland, Maine, its museums, including The Children's Museum, The Narrow-Gauge Railroad Museum (including a short train ride!) and The International Cryptozoology Museum (Think Bigfoot! It's very well done.), the famous Old Port Shopping District and many acclaimed eateries are a bit over an hour's drive.
Whether you're a family, a couple, a couple of friends, or enjoying your own company, you'll never find a more idyllic getaway than Eagle Point.
